Life doesn't always turn out the way we planned. A statement of the obvious, certainly. But in the hands of a master playwright such as Alan Bennett, the humdrum transforms into riveting drama.

Susan slowly reveals herself to us -- wife of a vicar, unappreciated, unprepared for parochial life, unsatisfied with her existance.

In her mediocre life lie echoes of our own lives. Susan can teach us all, and does, as she explores her own bitter sadness.

She's not embarrassed, mind you. On the contrary. Well-read, soft spoken and often misunderstood. she knows that if she just uses her assets to her best advantage, she's bound to get a break, sooner or later.

Discovering that Lesley is not all she thinks she is gives us a chance to reflect on our own perceptions of ourselves, and gives us insight as to how others see themselves.

Graham lives with his mother. Since his father dies, he's become the man of the house, and truth be told, he's quite happy at the state of affairs. After all, at his age, it's time to give back to his mother for all the years of care she's given to him. And he's never been all that interested in marrying, anyway.

When his idyllic, though borderline incenstuous, family life is interrupted by the arrival of his mother's old flame, Graham struggles with the idea that his mother may still have room in her heart for another man.
